Engineering

Profile

Enthusiastic and self-motivated by my desire to continually learn how and why things work in both my professional and personal life through practically solving problems in design and build projects. I have an understanding of the aesthetic design and functional engineering constraints needed to create products that people desire to own.

Collaborating as part of a design team and working independently during my professional experience in engineering, I have gained excellent communication skills. Through liaising between industrial design, engineering and manufacturing teams at each stage of projects to work together more efficiently and create better products faster.

Technical skills and competencies

  • 3D CAD (Pro Engineer & Creo) – 15 years experience
  • 2D AutoCAD
  • Mechanica (FEA) structural analysis
  • Computer languages: C++, Matlab & Simulink, Ricardo (WAVE) and FlowMaster
  • Aerodynamics – land speed record vehicle and automotive design
  • Thermodynamics – Automotive and Human
  • Working knowledge of FMEA’s and TQM methodologies
  • UK driving license

Employment

2015 Consulting Engineer (4 months)
Royal Enfield

I collaborated with Royal Enfield’s European industrial design team to create an integrated styling and engineering project plan for a range of new motorcycles. Providing engineering input, feasibility testing and 3D CAD modelling and FEA of concept motorcycle design proposals.

2014 Consulting Engineer (part time)
Xenophya designs

Engineering consulting working with Xenophya designs on a generic new motorcycle project plan proposal for Royal Enfield motorcycles.

2013-14 Contracting Engineer (part time)
Trident Powersports

Working as a link between the styling team based at Xenophya designs in Cramlington (Newcastle) and the engineering team based in Hinckley (Leicestershire). Scheming and packaging stage of the project to produce an engineered styling model of an all-terrain vehicle (ATV).

2002-2013 Chassis Design Engineer
Triumph Motorcycles

I have 10 years’ experience working as a Design Engineer at Triumph Designs. Design engineering at Triumph is divided into motorcycle project teams and further divided into engine and chassis teams. I have worked in four different chassis teams and on six motorcycle projects in my time at Triumph.

The role of a design engineer was to work with stylists, production, assembly, quality engineers, purchasers and suppliers to design components that function, can be manufactured and assembled repeatedly, bought or manufactured at the right cost and are aesthetically pleasing.

I have worked on all stages of development in motorcycle projects at Triumph from concept design through building and testing mule bikes to packaging and scheming, detailed design of components for manufacture and assembly and finally supporting a motorcycle into volume production.

1999-2000 Year in Industry – Ford
Visteon Automotive Systems

I was employed to setup and run a research and development project. The project investigated the economic viability of developing an advanced, intelligently controlled, prototype engine cooling system on a production vehicle to improve internal combustion engine performance, fuel economy, emissions, passenger comfort (heating) and engine warm up times.

Jun – July 1997 – Middleburn Engineering

I worked with a design engineer to create and develop mountain bike and roller skate product ideas and concepts and to design prototypes. I spent four weeks programming and operating CNC machinery at Middleburn’s manufacturing facility.

Projects

Citroen

Complete nut and bolt strip down. Redesign the rolling chassis to incorporate independent air ride suspension. A v8 engine driving the rear wheels through a 4 speed automatic transaxle. rebuild and upgrade existing Citroen bodywork panels and components.

TVR

Complete nut and bolt strip down and rebuild with additional design changes to the electrical wiring and suspension component upgrades.

Speed bike

The project started as a challenge from a friend to get a mechanism to work as a bicycle. Evolving into university design project, allowed me to apply the principles of abstract fluid dynamics and mechanisms to making a series of prototypes. Making improvements through experimenting and physically testing ideas.

3 wheeler

The prototype was a practical application of our personal interests the engineering principles my brother and I learnt during our university educations.
